if you scraped our skin off, we'd look like twins...

unless you're david duke, pat buchanan, or louis farrakhan, i don't think you could possibly argue with any of this...

i came to this country with the absurdly idealistic idea that i was entering the rainbow nirvana, the ethnic diversity capital of the world, where everyone lived in peace and harmony to the tune of 'let there be peace on earth'. just like on big bloody benetton advert. well...maybe not exactly, but i don't think it was idiotically naive of me to assume people in a metropolis such as new york would be a bit more liberal than elsewhere and virtually colour-blind. just goes to show what an 'ass' you really do make of 'u' and 'me' when you 'assume'. and as bad as the racial tension in new york was BEFORE, it seems i really stepped into the circle at the right time, just as it was escalating to the worst it's been since the turn of the last century. hate on tv and in newspapers and magazines, race riots in the streets, senseless killings, and other acts of violence have become al lthe rage. and WHY? what the fuck are they trying to prove? now, i'm a student of the arts. i'm not pretending to know all the ins and outs of biology. but i DID take enough science to do fairly well on my jr and leaving certs, so i think i'm well equipped to make the following generalisation - people are basically all the same, whether black or white, chinese, irish, or puerto rican, gay or straight, protestant, catholic, or jew. they've all got the same parts. and come to think of it, once you take the skin off 'em, they all pretty much look the same too. (i'm not advocating the practise of skinning people alive, but in THEORY...) so...why the hell should you hate someone simply cos their skin's a different colour from yours? it's sort of like ruminating over whether you should use red delicious or golden delicious apples for your pie (when actually, that's DOUBLY pointless as the mackintoshes cook up the best...just ask my entirely non-racist, pie-makin'-fool of a grandmother)

hate narrows your social life and your overall horizons something awful, and i can't help but think every time i see those morons going at it on the 11 o'clock cliche how many other serious problems might be solved if instead of shooting each other and parading around the streets with mis-spelt signs in hand, people just tried working together to actually GET STUFF DONE.

the overall lack of solidarity in this country is what gives me the impression that it hasn't long for this world. some may say that's just my anti-american bias talking, but say what you want, that's my story and i'm stickin' to it. united we stand, divided we fall...if a country's divided against itself, what chance has it got against the outside? think about THAT...
